Johnny Depp Makes Surprise Comic - Con Appearance For ‘Ebenezer’ Movie
Johnny Depp made a surprise in-character appearance as Ebenezer Scrooge at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, delighting fans with an immersive promotional stunt for his upcoming film Ebenezer, directed by Ti West.
Paramount Pictures transformed part of San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter into a Victorian-era Christmas village, complete with carolers and a recreated “Scrooge and Marley” storefront. After more than an hour of anticipation, Depp first appeared in an upstairs window before stepping outside to greet the crowd.
Staying fully in character, Depp responded to a fan’s greeting of “Good day to you, Mr. Scrooge” with the iconic reply, “What’s so good about it?” He continued the performance throughout the event, grumbling at questions about fair wages and eventually bidding the crowd farewell with a quiet, unmistakable “Humbug.”
Fans repeatedly shouted messages of support, including “We love you,” while Depp maintained his Scrooge persona from start to finish, aided by period costume and prosthetic makeup.
The appearance served as a high-profile promotion for Ebenezer, a new adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, which is scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 13. Rather than relying on a traditional Hall H presentation, Paramount opted for a live street performance, creating one of Comic-Con’s most talked-about moments.
The surprise appearance marked Depp’s third visit to San Diego Comic-Con. He previously appeared in character as Gellert Grindelwald during the 2018 Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald panel and attended the convention in 2009 to promote Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland.
