The genius of Johnny Depp

Appearances Magazines by Martina

The Culling by D. Allan Kerr: The genius of Johnny Depp writes that Johnny Depp’s portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow is genuine genius. What Johnny Depp has done here is inspiring – instead of sacrificing himself on the public altar to win over the masses, he has brought the masses to him.

He created something so original and with such panache that the entire world not only has to pay attention to it, they can’t get enough of it. By now the media has left little doubt Depp’s inventive portrayal of Capt. Jack Sparrow is the primary reason for the success of the “Pirates” films…

Servermove and whatnotever…

Uncategorized by Martina

Allright –
there haven’t been many updates in the last time.

This had many reasons:

1. I had my last weeks of the last semester before my diplom work at university and I never in my life had that less free time.

2. we moved over to a new server, to surpass hosting, and we first had to reupload everything.

3. because of the change I decided to as well switch the news, articles and updates script to a new one. News and articles were switched some time before, but today was the day I deleted the old updates folder and now added the new script –
I did not yet have the time to readd all the old updates. That’s why the last one is from 2005…of course it is not!!!!

Capt. Sparrow is gay? Shiver me timbers!

Projects by Martina

For weeks after we saw the first “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie, a debate raged in my family about the bizarre behavior of the lead character, Capt. Jack Sparrow, played by the delicious Johnny Depp.

“He’s drunk,” said my son.

“He’s crazy,” said my daughter.

“Wrong – all of you!” I said. “He’s gay.”

Now, after watching nearly five hours of Depp flitting around on white sands and prancing on ship decks, I’m left with little doubt: Depp has brought to the silver screen one of the most brilliantly entertaining gay characters of our time…

Uncategorized by Martina

The Associated Press reported on Sunday that Johnny Depp’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” has plundered more pirate treasure remaining the top movie for the third straight weekend. The Disney sequel passed the $305 million domestic total that its predecessor, 2003’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,” rang up during its entire six-month run. Pirate Director tired but happy

Interviews by Martina

www.stuff.co.nz recently interviewed the director, Gore Verbinski, of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest Fame, about the second instalment of his pirates adventure trilogy. Here’s a short excerpt…

Does Johnny Depp stay in character on set?

GORE: He turns Captain Jack on and off like a switch. Johnny’s so close to that character that there’s more Johnny Depp in Captain Jack than in any other character he’s played. I think if you’d seen him doing Ed Wood for example, you’d have seen him stay in character a lot more on set, trying to find the character and keep it and distill it. But Captain Jack is really close to Johnny. I think his other performances he’s been running away from an archetype, from being a leading man, the sort of guy who gets the girl and there’s usually a shyness and an introverted quality to those performances. But Jack is a braggart, a liar, a thief and a conman and at ease with it to. So I think there have been these floodgates with Johnny holding all this stuff back for years and suddenly with Captain Jack, Whoosh! The line I always keyed into in thinking how to direct Jack was one from the first movie: ‘You’re the worst pirate I’ve ever heard of’ – ‘Yes, but at least you’ve heard of me’.

American Filmgoers Fall For a Fey Pirate

Projects by Martina

With swords thrusting, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest features a protagonist whose mannerisms defy the stereotype of the traditional American action hero.

Most obviously, the character is morally ambiguous. That’s a given, since he’s a pirate. But the differences run more deeply. As some viewers–gay and straight–surely have noted, Depp’s performance leans a little toward the higher end of the Kinsey scale.

[While Depp] doesn’t explicitly say that situational homosexuality was a part of pirate life, but he notes that "women were thought to be bad luck on ships" and that long periods of time could separate these men from one port and the next. It’s done in a roundabout fashion, but Depp does acknowledge that, whether intentional or not, this side of Sparrow exists…
