Modi
About the Film
Paris, 1916. Over three chaotic, intoxicated days, the brilliant and self-destructive Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani careens through a wartime city that has yet to recognise his genius. Broke, drinking heavily and haunted by his own mortality, “Modi” ricochets between his loyal dealer, his fellow struggling artists and his tempestuous lover, the writer Beatrice Hastings.
After a wild night ends in a run-in with the police, Modigliani teeters on the edge of fleeing the city altogether — until a pivotal encounter with the powerful American art collector Maurice Gangnat forces him to confront what his work, and his life, are really worth. Johnny Depp’s second film as director paints a feverish, compassionate portrait of the artist as a young man on the brink.

Johnny Depp
Modì marks Johnny Depp’s second feature as a director, nearly three decades after his debut The Brave (1997) — and here he stays entirely behind the camera. A lifelong painter and lover of art himself, Depp brings a deep personal affinity to this study of Modigliani, shooting a woozy, atmospheric portrait of bohemian Paris and coaxing a raw central performance from Riccardo Scamarcio, with Al Pacino as the collector Gangnat.
