The Tourist
About the Film
Reeling from the disappearance of her fugitive lover, the elegant Elise Clifton-Ward is under constant surveillance by British agents who hope she will lead them to him. Following his written instructions, she boards a train to Venice and picks out a stranger of similar build to act as a decoy: Frank Tupelo, a mild-mannered American maths teacher from Wisconsin travelling to mend a broken heart.
Mistaken by police and gangsters alike for the man they are hunting, Frank is suddenly swept into a world of rooftop chases, canal-boat pursuits and glamorous intrigue across Venice. As he falls for the mysterious Elise, the film builds to a twist that recasts everything the audience — and Frank — thought they understood about who is really who.

Johnny Depp
Johnny Depp plays Frank Tupelo as a deliberately ordinary everyman — rumpled, unassuming and out of his depth — a community-college maths teacher swept up in a glamorous espionage plot he barely understands. Depp underplays the role for gentle comedy, letting Frank’s bewildered decency and dry humour anchor the film’s Venetian romance and its final sleight-of-hand.
