About the Film

Years after his father Will Turner was bound to the Flying Dutchman, young Henry Turner sets out to break the curse the only way he can: by finding the Trident of Poseidon, a relic said to command every power of the sea. His search leads him to a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow and to Carina Smyth, a sharp-minded astronomer whose diary may hold the map to the Trident’s hidden island.

Their quest awakens an old terror — Captain Armando Salazar, a ghostly Spanish naval officer whom a young Jack once doomed to the Devil’s Triangle. Freed and hungry for revenge, Salazar and his spectral crew hunt Jack across the ocean aboard the Silent Mary. Reuniting with his rival Barbossa, Jack races to reach the Trident first; the final battle breaks all the sea’s curses at once, frees Will Turner from the Dutchman and reveals a surprising family tie between Carina and Barbossa.

Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow is at a low ebb here — luckless, drink-worn and abandoned by most of his crew — which lets Depp lean into the character’s shabbier, more haphazard comedy. Flashbacks also give the film a digitally de-aged young Jack, showing how his very first act of cunning created the vengeful Salazar, and reaffirming that Sparrow’s greatest weapon has always been his wits rather than his sword.
