Depp received the new award on Serbia’s Statehood Day, which commemorates the Serbian Revolution against Ottoman rule in the early 1800’s.
As well as the actor, a number of veterans from the Kosovan war, and political representatives, were also honoured at the ceremony.
Speaking during the ceremony, Depp said he was proud to receive the award and thanked the president for his ‘kindness’, BalkanInsight reports. He said:
‘I truly, sincerely thank you, President Vucic, and this medal of merit, if I am given the honour to walk away with this, I thank you for being kind enough to bestow it upon me.’

Johnny Depp will be awarded the Gold Medal of Merit of the Republic of Serbia for his contributions to the country’s continued efforts to enhance and expand its local community of artists, the Iervolino Studios animation company said on Friday.
The Belgrade-based company said that Depp would receive the medal on Serbian Statehood Day, on 15 February.
A press release recalled that Depp was in Belgrade in October 2021 to promote the animated series PUFFINS IMPOSSIBLE, developed in Serbia and created by Iervolino Studios (IES) and produced by Archangel Digital Studios (ADS).
“Johnny Depp’s leading role and active participation in the promotion of PUFFINS IMPOSSIBLE helped leverage Serbia’s artistic strengths among the global filmmaking industry,” it said.
Johnny Depp is scheduled to accept the inaugural Rhonda’s Kiss Healing and Hope Award.
The organization, which helps cancer patients in need, is putting on a concert on Thursday, Nov. 3, at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles, California, and the 53-year-old actor is expected to attend. Proceeds from the event — which will have Weezer performing and Sugar Ray’s Mark McGrath emceeing — will go to the Cedars-Sinai Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute.
“Cancer affects many lives and this year it was my family’s turn,” Depp said in a statement. “The team at Cedars-Sinai works tirelessly to help people in their darkest moments. Their work is invaluable to all of us, and I will support any opportunity to help shine a light on the cause through Rhonda’s Kiss.”
In May, Depp’s mother died after battling a long illness. She was 81. “The contributions Johnny has continually made in honor of his mother have been instrumental in helping us to develop the kind of research we need to move the needle forward in the fight against lung cancer,” Dr. Mirhadi said, adding that Depp has made “regular visits” with cancer patients, and has been “instrumental in supporting research on lung cancer in our department at Cedars-Sinai.”
General admission tickets are currently sold out for the Rhonda’s Kiss event, but limited VIP tickets are still available at www.rhondaskiss.org.
Johnny Depp gave a lurching intro to Shep Gordon, the subject of Mike Myers’ documentary Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon, in presenting Myers with the Hollywood Documentary Award.
“That’s the weirdest mic I’ve ever seen in my life. I mean right? I, um, I’m not very good at this kind of thing. (Bleep) For decades Shep Gordon has been one of the most beloved and respected talent managers in the music in-dus-try. He’s also currently the star and subject of the documentary Supermensch because he is a mensch and I have been very, very lucky to have him in my life. He’s someone I consider a great fuh-riend, somebody uh, yeah, an incredibly loyal loyal friend. Um, and so weeeee, you, have to watch the film. Yeah, there you go, what does that say? Can somebody (bleep). I mean it’s one of those nights.”
The “Lone Ranger” star said jokingly of his award: “This is a great honor, but [while] I was occasionally glancing at the screen, I realized what a ridiculous thing I’ve done.”
