First use of Cypriot dialect in Hollywood Blockbuster

Articles by Martina

Toplum Postasi.net For the first time in Hollywood film production the use of the Cypriot vernacular features in the new production: Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man’s Chest.

As if mimicking the Cyprus problem, two pirates on a ship at sea are arguing, one in Cypriot Greek (Kypriaka) and the other in Cypriot Turkish (Kıbrıslıca) over a hat. In the end, the two are swallowed completely by a mythical giant squid – the kraken.

British actor of Turkish Cypriot descent Nej Adamson who previously played Ali Osman in EastEnders in the 1980s plays the role of the pirate who speaks in Cypriot Turkish, while Jimmy Roussounis, a Greek Cypriot actor plays the second pirate who speaks Cypriot Greek. The two men who have never met each other before went to St.Vincent Island in the Caribbean to film the movie.

The two Cypriot actors were initially meant to perform in Greek and Turkish until Roussounis suggested that, “instead of speaking in Turkish or Greek or English with an accent”, that the two men should do it in their natural Cypriot vernacular, one inCypriotGreek and the other in Cypriot Turkish. The director agreed, allowing the two men who did not have a script, to “improvise,” as long as there was no cursing.

Orlando Still Blooming for ‘Pirates’

Zaptoit.com: Rumors of Will Turner’s death have been greatly exaggerated.

Fans afraid that Orlando Bloom won’t return to the “Pirates of the Caribbean” films can rest easy. Despite buzz that Bloom’s character would be sacrificed because of budget constraints, the rumors are “completely unfounded.”

Public Relations firm New Market Strategies informed journalists via email that Bloom will return to the swashbuckling franchise.

“As some of you may have seen,” begins the statement, “there have been some rumors going around online regarding potential absence of Orlando Bloom in the future ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ films. We are working closely with Disney and want you to know that while we cannot comment on specific plot points, such rumors are completely unfounded.”

The third installment, “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End,” is due in theaters May 2007.

Rush with fame

Articles by Martina

Herald Sun – GEOFFREY Rush is speaking from Los Angeles, where he is putting the finishing touches on the third and final instalment of the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy,
writes Claire Sutherland.

…”Actually, finishing touches is a bit of an understatement,” he laughs. “We’re sort of filming the grand finale of the great trilogy where 12 plots all converge on one massive, almost mythological, action sequence. It’s quite extraordinary and bigger than Ben-Hur.

“The scene we’re shooting is a global pirate summit, and I can’t say much because (producer) Jerry Bruckheimer might kill me.”

The production, called At World’s End, made the news recently, thanks to claims Rolling Stone Keith Richards, shooting a cameo as Jack Sparrow’s father, was drunk on the set.

Rush is of no help one way or the other in laying the story to rest.

“I think with Keith you get such an excitable persona you’re not quite sure where he’s at,” Rush says.

“The man I met on set was a very playful, excitable kid . . . this completely eccentric character turns up and plays by totally different rules to the slightly more manicured actors who turn up, so that was very, very thrilling.”

Johnny Depp, who famously modelled the Jack Sparrow character after Richards, knew who was boss, Rush says.

“He’s the only person in the whole trilogy of films who can put Jack Sparrow in his place,

‘Pirates’ Producers to Kill Off Bloom?

HOLLYWOOD – Orlando Bloom’s much-loved character in Pirates of the Caribbean will reportedly be killed off in the fourth installment of the Disney series — so says a Disney insider who spoke to the British paper Daily Star.

According to the source, the script for the fourth film is currently being written, and Disney bean counters are already examining ways to cut its massive costs.

According to British newspaper reports, Bloom’s character Will Turner is deemed “not necessary” to the sea-faring saga, although his cast mates Keira Knightley and Johnny Depp are unaffected by the cutbacks.

The report also states that the films’ minor characters, who were faithfully brought back for the first sequel, are also on the chopping block.

IF Magazine – 7/10/2006

Interviews by Martina

iF MAGAZINE: You make your comic pratfalls look easy and effortless but this isn’t easy and effortless. How do you get the timing so right and how hard do you have to work in making these falls look accidental and comic?

JOHNNY DEPP: Oh boy. That’s the key. How do you keep it fresh’ How do you keep it working’ For me, there’s a real fine art to the timing that I’m still working on because you go back and watch guys like Chaplin and Keaton or even in the dramatic roles, Lon Chaney. The timing, especially in those silent films is just astonishing. But also in today’s cinema, timing can be helped or hindered by editing. So I don’t know. I just sort of do my best.

iF: Speaking of timing, what did you think when you heard about Keith Richards falling out of the palm tree, and were you concerned that he might not be able to star in PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD’S END?

DEPP: I thought that was bad timing. But it solidified my belief that he would be the perfect father for Captain Jack. Initially we were all super-worried ‘ ‘My God, what has he done” But being in touch with his people, his camp, I know that he’s doing fine and it was a momentary lapse and he’s back on the road soon and totally cool.

iF: You were at the launch of the new revamped Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland.
