Depp to play fugitive in new movie
Johnny Depp is set to star in ‘Shantaram’, a film based on a true story of a robber on the run.
The Hollywood Reporter says that the film will be adapted from Gregory David Roberts’ autobiographical book of the same name by Oscar-winning writer Eric Roth (‘Forrest Gump’).
Australian Roberts was a heroin addict who was convicted of armed robbery but escaped from prison and fled to Bombay, where he set up a medical clinic for people living in the slums.
He was recruited by the Bombay underworld, where he became a passport forger, counterfeiter and gun-runner.
Roberts travels also took him to Afghanistan, where he fought with the mujaheddin. Copyright RTE.ie

Oscar-winning writer Eric Roth has been tapped to adapt the Gregory David Roberts novel Shantaram for Warner Bros. Pictures and Initial Entertainment Group.
Set in the 1980s and based loosely on Roberts’s life, the story centers on an Australian heroin addict convicted of robbery who escapes to India, where he reinvents himself as a doctor. When he gets involved in smuggling and gun-running, his adventurous life leads him to Afghanistan and battles with Russians. Roberts wrote the initial draft.
The book was acquired in October 2004 in a $2 million purchase by Warner and Initial. Brad Pitt’s Plan B and Graham King, through Initial, are producing, as is Johnny Depp, via his Infinitum Nihil banner. Depp also is attached to star.
Libertine movie chases UK awards
BBC News – The Libertine and Mrs Henderson Presents have received the greatest number of nominations at this year’s British Independent Film Awards. They have eight nominations each, with Johnny Depp competing for the best actor prize for his Libertine role. Winners will be announced on 30 November.
The Libertine stars Depp as 17th Century poet John Wilmot, who received posthumous acclaim after living a debauched life.
It earned Laurence Dunmore a best director nomination and best supporting cast nominations for Tom Hollander and Rosamund Pike.
The awards, which recognise independent film-making in Britain, were established eight years ago.
Winners be chosen by a jury including actress Amanda Donohoe and Bullet Boy star Ashley Walters.
Founder Elliott Grove said; “It is, by anyone’s standards, a very powerful year for British cinema.”
Denver international film festival 2005
The Denver Post has reported that the 28th Starz Denver International Film Festival, produced by the Denver Film Society, rolls-out the red carpet on November 10 – 20, 2005. This year’s event will host hundreds of actors, directors, writers, producers and industry professionals from around the world who will be on hand to discuss their craft at screenings, panels, coffee talks and parties. Included in this year’s event is a series of five milestones, one of which is a tribute to jouralist/writer, Hunter S. Thompson who committed suicide last February and was remembered in a lavish ceremony just last August funded by Johnny Depp and others. The milestone will include:
MILESTONES
Remembering the Legendary Gonzo Writer Hunter S. Thompson
Held at the historic Denver Press Club, the memorial will include remembrances from a panel of Hunter’s close friends and associates. Also featured will be the world premiere of filmmaker Wayne Ewing’s documentary profiling the recent outlandish funeral service in Woody Creek, CO. The author’s remains were shot out of a 153-foot cannon and rained down on family, friends and such Hollywood luminaries as Johnny Depp, Sean Penn, John Cusack and Bill Murray. Also included in the program, director Tom Thurman, working on a Starz original documentary about Thompson, will present recent interview footage with several of these luminaries. Alcohol and antics will be served.
In Deppth Interview
IF your last sight of Johnny Depp was as the thin, pale Willie Wonka in this year’s Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, you’d be in for a shock if you saw him now.
When we talked to him this summer in Nassau, Bahamas, he was already into his fourth month of the more than nine he’ll be spending filming two Pirates Of The Caribbean sequels back-to-back.
A glutton for punishment, Depp also pulled double duty last year — starring in Charlie for director/best-friend Tim Burton, and voicing Burton’s other movie, the stop-motion animated dark comedy Corpse Bride.
That’s quite the tan. I hope you’re using sunblock.
Thanks, what can I say? Three months on a boat. I’m not using sunblock at this point, but I did. You gotta watch the sun out here because it’ll really take a bite out of you. But now it’s sort of leveled off. I don’t think I will get any darker than this.
You’re not known for doing sequels and now you’re doing two at once.
Some people say “Ha! Depp sold out!” But I don’t believe I have. At least that wasn’t my intention. I wanted to play Captain Jack again because he’s so much fun to play. I mean, if they wanted to do Pirates 7, why not? In Pirates 2 and 3 you get to see a couple of newer layers of Captain Jack.
Tell me about doing two movies at once for Tim Burton.

5 things about Johnny Depp
– He has 12 tattoos. He got his first at 17 (a Native American chief on his right bicep) and the last after the birth of his son (the name Jack on his right forearm).
– For Pirates of the Caribbean he knew that the directors would never agree to letting him get gold-capped teeth, so he went out and got lots more than he wanted done. He showed the directors, and they decided to let him keep a few — the ones he wanted all along.
– Made a brief cameo in Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare and was credited as Oprah Noodlemantra.
– He turned down the lead role in Speed (which made a star out of Keanu Reeves), Brad Pitt’s part in Legends of the Fall and the role of Lestat in Interview with the Vampire which later went to Tom Cruise.
– Depp, who now speaks French, lives with his family in a small town in France with a population of just over 2,000. He also owns a small island in the Caribbean.
I do!
Depp has been engaged four times!
– Sherilyn Fenn, actress (TV’s cult hit Twin Peaks)
– Jennifer Grey, actress (Dirty Dancing)
– Winona Ryder, actress (Edward Scissorhands). After their split, Depp had his WINONA FOREVER tattoo laser altered,
Bride Delivers Halloween Fun
Tim Burton seems to have a man crush on Johnny Depp. I guess you can’t really blame him – Johnny Depp is the man! From his off kilter performances (as in Pirates of the Caribbean and Willy Wonka) to his incredibly heartfelt and touching roles (as in Finding Neverland), this guy can do no wrong – Christopher Erat of Clarkson Integrator.
The latest pairing of Depp and Burton comes in the form of yet another stop-motion animation film: Corpse Bride. With Wallace and Gromit stealing the spotlight as of late, can Corpse Bride compete with its more mature themes and Burton-esque gothic style? The answer – yes. But only if moviegoers give it a chance.
Being innocent, artistic, and sincere, Victor is a character we have all seen before but cannot help but love. Perhaps it has something to do with Depp’s charismatic voice, or maybe we all love to love cute, artsy characters. [more…]
Oooh, Pirates Pics Online Now!
Even though Captain Jack Sparrow soars into theaters next Summer (alongside Daddy Richards, I hope), some “unofficial” production stills from the Pirates of the Caribbean sequel are now hitting the online. Although they all seem to follow a common theme (bit heavy on Orlando), they’re sure to whet your appetite, if just a little bit – by Erik Davis for Cinematical.
**Contains Spoilers**
In Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, Captain Depp must find a way out of a blood debt he owes to the Captain of the Flying Dutchman or else evil will have its way with him in the afterlife. Joining Jack once again for another awesome adventure are Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightly), who are right in the midst of planning a big old wedding when chaos erupts.
