AFI Fest salutes the prolific actor for his body of work and his newest challenging role.

Johnny on the screen
The four films in AFI’s Depp retrospective reflect some of the actor’s most memorable work.

In the monologue that opens Laurence Dunmore’s feature-film debut “The Libertine,” Johnny Depp, playing the libidinous John Wilmot, second Earl of Rochester in the court of King Charles II, leans forward from his seat in a dimly lit room to tell his audience that they will utterly detest the man they are about to meet. He boasts of his unparalleled vices, touting his depravity proudly before reclining backward into shadow and disappearing from view.

It is an unconventional start for a period costume drama, but the film itself (which the Weinstein Co. is set to release on Nov. 23 in New York and Los Angeles) is, like its leading man, unconventional. Adapted from Stephen Jeffreys’ play of the same name — which was originally staged with John Malkovich in the lead at Chicago’s famed Steppenwolf Theatre — “Libertine” depicts the latter years of the life of Rochester, post-Elizabethan England’s most notorious bad boy, whose obsessions with sex and rebellion led him down a fatal path of alcoholism and disease.

Despite Johnny Depps dodgy dress sense he still looked lovely when he stepped out for a spot of retail therapy in New York. Armed with a stylist, Johnny, 42, headed for Bloomingdales and Macy’s. But we can’t be too tough on the super sexy fella as he admits he has no idea how to dress well. He said: “Some people have that ability to wear whatever they want and wear it well, but not me.” Copyright (c) 1998-2005 The Daily Star. All rights reserved.

Oscar-winning writer Eric Roth has been tapped to adapt the Gregory David Roberts novel Shantaram for Warner Bros. Pictures and Initial Entertainment Group.

Set in the 1980s and based loosely on Roberts’s life, the story centers on an Australian heroin addict convicted of robbery who escapes to India, where he reinvents himself as a doctor. When he gets involved in smuggling and gun-running, his adventurous life leads him to Afghanistan and battles with Russians. Roberts wrote the initial draft.

The book was acquired in October 2004 in a $2 million purchase by Warner and Initial. Brad Pitt’s Plan B and Graham King, through Initial, are producing, as is Johnny Depp, via his Infinitum Nihil banner. Depp also is attached to star.

In Deppth Interview

Interviews by Martina

IF your last sight of Johnny Depp was as the thin, pale Willie Wonka in this year’s Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, you’d be in for a shock if you saw him now.

When we talked to him this summer in Nassau, Bahamas, he was already into his fourth month of the more than nine he’ll be spending filming two Pirates Of The Caribbean sequels back-to-back.

A glutton for punishment, Depp also pulled double duty last year — starring in Charlie for director/best-friend Tim Burton, and voicing Burton’s other movie, the stop-motion animated dark comedy Corpse Bride.

That’s quite the tan. I hope you’re using sunblock.

Thanks, what can I say? Three months on a boat. I’m not using sunblock at this point, but I did. You gotta watch the sun out here because it’ll really take a bite out of you. But now it’s sort of leveled off. I don’t think I will get any darker than this.

You’re not known for doing sequels and now you’re doing two at once.

Some people say “Ha! Depp sold out!” But I don’t believe I have. At least that wasn’t my intention. I wanted to play Captain Jack again because he’s so much fun to play. I mean, if they wanted to do Pirates 7, why not? In Pirates 2 and 3 you get to see a couple of newer layers of Captain Jack.

5 things about Johnny Depp

– He has 12 tattoos. He got his first at 17 (a Native American chief on his right bicep) and the last after the birth of his son (the name Jack on his right forearm).
– For Pirates of the Caribbean he knew that the directors would never agree to letting him get gold-capped teeth, so he went out and got lots more than he wanted done. He showed the directors, and they decided to let him keep a few — the ones he wanted all along.
– Made a brief cameo in Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare and was credited as Oprah Noodlemantra.
– He turned down the lead role in Speed (which made a star out of Keanu Reeves), Brad Pitt’s part in Legends of the Fall and the role of Lestat in Interview with the Vampire which later went to Tom Cruise.
– Depp, who now speaks French, lives with his family in a small town in France with a population of just over 2,000. He also owns a small island in the Caribbean.

I do!

Depp has been engaged four times!
– Sherilyn Fenn, actress (TV’s cult hit Twin Peaks)
– Jennifer Grey, actress (Dirty Dancing)
Winona Ryder, actress (Edward Scissorhands). After their split, Depp had his WINONA FOREVER tattoo laser altered,
