For forty years Hunter S. Thompson struggled to finish his first novel – The Rum Diary – and then he fought until he died to make it a movie. Johnny Depp promised Hunter the book would become a film, and now it is opening in theaters in the United States on October 28, 2011. So it seems fitting to finally show and tell what I know about The Rum Diary and have been saving for many years in my archives. I purposely held back many of these Rum Diary scenes from my fourth film about Hunter – Animals, Whores & Dialogue – hoping that we could do something a bit different with them, like this series of “webisodes” – short, self-contained videos for the world wide web that tell the story of the making of The Rum Diary first as a book and then as a movie from Hunter’s point of view.

The Run Diary is going poster crazy as last week, the film finally put its star Johnny Depp front and center on its movie poster. The first one-sheet featured mini rum bottles spelling out the words The Rum Diary. Now, the latest poster release has Depp at the end of a room in utter dismay, greeting the day in his boxers.

Things are looking up for the long-delayed literary adaptation The Rum Diary, Johnny Depp’s second run at writer Hunter M. Thompson. Whenever a movie sits on the shelf for long, it starts to small a little. But while FilmDistrict did not take the film to early fall film fests, they have booked it as the opening of Elvis Mitchell’s Film Independent series at LACMA and will play the upcoming Hamptons Film Festival. The 19th annual Hamptons International Film Festival runs from October 13 to October 17.

Empire was on set, and learned a little about the 1972-set film version. The story focuses on Barnabas Collins (Depp), who was transformed into a vampire by a jilted lover (Eva Green’s witch Angelique) way back in the 1700s and buried. He’s just been dug up, and attempts to reintegrate with his descendants, led by Michelle Pfeiffer’s Elizabeth and Jonny Lee Miller’s Roger – despite the fact that Angelique is still around and still not in a forgiving mood.
Said screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith, “Tim and Johnny took a long time explaining exactly why it had to be 1972. 1969 was too early and 1973 was too late. 1972 is right at the time when the hippie movement and all its peace and love is dying out and being replaced by this me-me-me generation in the ’70s who are all about showing their wealth and having everything.”
There’s also good news for those who didn’t love Alice In Wonderland’s 3D – this will be firmly 2D. Says producer Richard Zanuck, “We discussed this quite a bit. We didn’t want to be categorised as another 3D extravaganza, because this isn’t. We have action sequences, but mostly it’s interaction between characters, and that’s where the humour and the story come from.”
Dark Shadows is out on May 11, 2012, and you can read more about it in the new issue of Empire, out in stores this Thursday.
So far nothing has been officially announced, but this sounds like we might get an official statement within the next few days.
Director Gore Verbinski and Jerry Bruckheimer managed to bring the budget down to $215 million, a figure that’s palatable enough for Disney in these uncertain economic times, with John Carter and Oz The Great and Powerful presenting more than enough big-budget risk for the studio right now.
The process of bringing down the budget involved Depp, Verbinski, and Bruckheimer renegotiating their contracts on the film. More importantly, Verbinski overhauled the actual production budget in order to reduce the figure while also retaining the blockbuster spectacle that audiences expect from a reunion of the principal figures behind the the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies…..

A little preview:
Behold the real visage of Johnny Depp’s vampire from Dark Shadows!
As you can see from this cast shot, Depp’s bloodsucking pater familias Barnabas Collins actually borrows heavily from the aged-little boy look of original Dark Shadows star Jonathan Frid — not that anyone would be happy to see this guy show up as your prom date either.
Still, this official First Look may reassure those die-hard fans of the original series, memorably offbeat ABC daytime drama about a vampire whose extended family are bedeviled by ghosts, witches, and other gothic woes.
Depp, who fought for years to make this movie, is one of those fans. “I do remember, very vividly, practically sprinting home from school in the afternoon to see Jonathan Frid play Barnabas Collins,” the actor says. “Even then, at that age, I knew — this has got to be weird.”
