Dark Chocolate has the magic ingredient

TIM BURTON’s deliciously dark adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory won the Bafta Kids’ Vote in the 10th British Academy Children’s Film and Television Awards yesterday – By Dalya Alberge for The Times.

The film, starring Johnny Depp as the reclusive genius Willy Wonka, was picked after a nationwide poll open to children under the age of 16 attracted more than 30,000 votes on the CiTV and CBBC websites.

It emerged as the most popular of ten family films, including Madagascar, Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events and The Incredibles.

Corpse Bride Competing for Animated Feature Oscar

Di-ve.com announced today that Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride is one of ten films competing for the coveted 2005 Oscar in the Best Animated Feature Category. Other eligible films are: Chicken Little, Gulliver’s Travel, Hoodwinked, Howl’s Moving Castle, Madagascar, Robots, Steamboy, Valiant, and Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit.

Tuesday, January 31, 2006 the nominations for the Best Animated Feature Category and all 78th Academy Award nominations will be announced.

Sunday, March 5, 2006 – Kodak Theatre, Hollywood – the Academy Awards Presentation for outstanding film achievements for 2005.

Libertine movie chases UK awards

BBC News – The Libertine and Mrs Henderson Presents have received the greatest number of nominations at this year’s British Independent Film Awards. They have eight nominations each, with Johnny Depp competing for the best actor prize for his Libertine role. Winners will be announced on 30 November.

The Libertine stars Depp as 17th Century poet John Wilmot, who received posthumous acclaim after living a debauched life.

It earned Laurence Dunmore a best director nomination and best supporting cast nominations for Tom Hollander and Rosamund Pike.

The awards, which recognise independent film-making in Britain, were established eight years ago.

Winners be chosen by a jury including actress Amanda Donohoe and Bullet Boy star Ashley Walters.

Founder Elliott Grove said; “It is, by anyone’s standards, a very powerful year for British cinema.”

Denver international film festival 2005

The Denver Post has reported that the 28th Starz Denver International Film Festival, produced by the Denver Film Society, rolls-out the red carpet on November 10 – 20, 2005. This year’s event will host hundreds of actors, directors, writers, producers and industry professionals from around the world who will be on hand to discuss their craft at screenings, panels, coffee talks and parties. Included in this year’s event is a series of five milestones, one of which is a tribute to jouralist/writer, Hunter S. Thompson who committed suicide last February and was remembered in a lavish ceremony just last August funded by Johnny Depp and others. The milestone will include:

Remembering the Legendary Gonzo Writer Hunter S. Thompson
Held at the historic Denver Press Club, the memorial will include remembrances from a panel of Hunter’s close friends and associates. Also featured will be the world premiere of filmmaker Wayne Ewing’s documentary profiling the recent outlandish funeral service in Woody Creek, CO. The author’s remains were shot out of a 153-foot cannon and rained down on family, friends and such Hollywood luminaries as Johnny Depp, Sean Penn, John Cusack and Bill Murray. Also included in the program, director Tom Thurman, working on a Starz original documentary about Thompson, will present recent interview footage with several of these luminaries. Alcohol and antics will be served.

Grove – Now that the Golden Globe and Oscar timetables have been announced it’s clear that a side effect of the Academy’s schedule changes will be to restore the Globes’ potential to influence Oscar voters as they make their nominations. In terms of films with awards potential that have already surfaced,[one] that come to mind is: “Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride” (Warner Bros.), directed by Tim Burton and with such voice talents as Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham-Carter, Emily Watson and Albert Finney. Opening wide Sept. 23, it’s a likely contender for Oscar’s best animated feature award.
