‘Libertine’ Johnny Depp Honored at AFI Fest

Appearances by Martina

LOS ANGELES – Johnny Depp was honored at AFI Fest 2005 with a career tribute and the premiere of his new film, “The Libertine.” By SUSAN BULLINGTON KATZ, For The Associated Press.

Depp was honored for his body of film work, which includes Oscar-nominated roles in “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” and “Finding Neverland,” as well as “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” “Chocolat” and “Edward Scissorhands.”

During the presentation, Depp made jokes – mostly self-effacing ones – and let the audience know that he wasn’t entirely comfortable seeing his old roles on the screen. “What was bordering on torture was just having to watch those clips – not the clips themselves, but me – seeing me. I’m not very used to that, you know. I like walking away from a film with the experience. I love it. But I don’t like having to watch what I went through.”

Movie’s key players are hauntingly familiar

Appearances by Martina

The dead bride, Helena Bonham Carter, wore a brown sweater and frilly olive skirt. Jittery groom Johnny Depp wore white pants and a gray T-shirt. Wedding singer Danny Elfman was all in black. Matchmaker Tim Burton wore a blue shirt and black slacks – by David Germain for Associated Press.

The key players of “Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride” sat down recently at the Toronto International Film Festival to share recollections of their strange and wondrous animated matrimonial fantasy and ponder why it is they all collaborate so often.

“With all of these people here, it’s nice because it feels like a real artistic collaboration,” “Corpse Bride” director Burton said in an interview, seated alongside co-director Mike Johnson, voice stars Depp and Bonham Carter and composer Elfman, who also wrote the movie’s songs and sang one of them.

Depp known for his screen zoo of character oddities

Appearances by Martina

TORONTO – The groom of the corpse bride, sporting his trademark goatee and frumpy hat and an arm tattoo that reads “Jack,” looked hopeful and yet apprehensive – by Mal Vincent for the Virginian-Pilot.
He wanted to know. He really wanted to know. “Well, man,” he said, “What is it? I can trust you. You wouldn’t steer me wrong.”

He turned a thumb down for a second and then a thumb up accompanied by a hint of a sardonic yet sincere smile. The scene was in the midst of the hoopla that accompanies the Toronto International Film Festival press circus. There was no time for a conversation – just Johnny Depp passing quickly in the hallway between press conferences.

Instinctively, we gave him a thumbs up.

“You really think so? Thanks, man. This was different, you know. I’ve never done anything like this before.”

Depp Immortalized at Hollywood Theater

Appearances by Martina

LOS ANGELES – The Associated Press – The hands that were replaced with cutlery in “Edward Scissorhands” and wore gloves in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” are now immortalized in concrete.

Johnny Depp signed his name and placed his handprints and footprints in wet concrete in front of the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard.

“So this is weird,” Deep said as hundreds of fans watched the ceremony Friday. “I mean, to say that this is overwhelming is probably the understatement of the millennium.”

Depp Gets Used To Success

Appearances by Martina

Johnny Depp told SCI FI Wire that he never paid attention to the box-office performance of his films until his recent blockbuster hits Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.

“I’ve learned to sort of condition myself to not have any expectations in terms of box office or result to that degree, because, as you all well know as well I do, that kind of thing escaped me for many, many years,” Depp said at a small press conference at the Toronto International Film Festival. “So it’s relatively a new experience to have more than a few people go and see my films. But it’s very exciting.”

The whole box-office game is foreign to him, Depp said in Toronto, where he is promoting his voice work in director Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride. He said he called his agent recently to ask how Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was doing. “She said, ‘Yeah. It looks like it’s going to cross the $200 million mark domestically,’” he said. “I didn’t know what that meant, and I said, ‘Well, is that good?’ She said, ‘Yeah. It’s very good.

Depp likes to channel oddball celebs

Appearances by Martina

Johnny Depp has said he didn’t set out to be ‘captain weird,’ but his affection for off-kilter, misfit roles seems to fit the Hollywood rebel perfectly – By Sherri Wood – Toronto Sun.

In Toronto at the Film Festival this week to promote his newest role in Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride, the animated movie that opens today, Depp looked perfectly the oddball part. He channeled a style somewhere between a homeless beatnik thespian and Hunter S. Thompson in a haphazard outfit, complete with ragged, handmade accessories, fedora-like hat, bulky, dark rimmed glasses and gold teeth.

Despite his own eccentricities, Depp said the inspiration for his offbeat characters comes not from a hidden inner weird well — but from outside sources, specifically, other oddball celebs.

Toronto Film Festival: Seen and Heard Part III

Appearances by Martina

LOS ANGELES Zap2it.com – Downtown Toronto was still in the grip of premieres, parties and photographers midway through the city’s 30th annual film festival. Here’s the latest update of what the stars were up to when not giving interviews – By Hanh Nguyen.

Johnny Depp – Still sporting scraggly hair and gold-capped teeth for the “Pirates of the Caribbean” sequels, Depp made a quick stop by the Luxury Lounge at the Park Hyatt Hotel to pick up two pairs of sunglasses for his sister. Although his visit was brief, the “Corpse Bride” actor found time to sketch a picture of a bleeding heart that will be auctioned off for Katrina relief.

Others contributing to the celebrity sketches include: “Brothers Grimm” director Terry Gilliam, “X-Men’s” Iceman himself Shawn Ashmore, “Ice Princess” Michelle Trachtenberg and “CSI” wiseguy Eric Szmanda.

Everybody being nice at Film Fest

Appearances by Martina

TORONTO – Philadelphia Daily – Howard Gensler – Here at the Toronto International Film Festival, the paparazzi have been typically rude -although on better behavior than normal; foreign press and junketeers have been typically fawning – doing interviews then asking for autographs; the TV folk have been much better looking than the print journalists; the directors and screenwriters have been earnest, amusing and intelligent; and the stars have been shockingly cooperative and polite.

Johnny Depp, perhaps the biggest star in the world after “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” was spotted signing autographs and joking with a group of children – a far cry from the moody, whack job the tabs often make him out to be.
