Hunter Thompson’s ashes arriving in armored truck

General by Martina

WOODY CREEK – An armored truck hauling the pulverized remains of Hunter S. Thompson was en route to Owl Farm on Tuesday afternoon as swarms of workers sweated the last details of the offbeat writer’s ballyhooed funeral service. By Troy Hooper/Aspen Daily News Staff Writer – August 17, 2005.

The bulletproof truck is needed to ensure the public’s safety, according to Anita Thompson, the late author’s wife, because Thompson’s ashes have been sealed inside the tops of dozens of fireworks that will explode above his property on Saturday. Actor Johnny Depp is funding the event, which organizers estimate will cost roughly $2.5 million, to fulfill the vision that Thompson detailed in a 1978 BBC documentary and to his friends and family leading up to his suicide. Seated in front of his typewriter, Thompson shot himself in the head Feb. 20. He was 67.

Forgotten Classic of the Week – Ed Wood (1994)

Projects by Martina

Though Depp and Burton have made many good films together, none of them have been as good as the 1994 classic Ed Wood.

Depp stars as the title character Edward D. Wood, Jr. Ed Wood tells the story of this real life filmmaker and his quest for Hollywood glory. Ed Wood made classic ‘B’ movies such as Plan 9 From Outer Space and Bride of the Monster. The film Ed Wood shows Wood’s life through a sympathetic eye and shows a passionate filmmaker whose movies didn’t come out on screen the way he perceived them in his mind. The main plot of the film revolves around Ed’s friendship with horror movie legend Bela Lugosi. Lugosi and Wood worked together quite a few times during the end of Lugosi’s life.

Projects by Martina

JOHNNY Depp may have lampooned Rolling Stone Keith Richards’ drug-addled manner when he played Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean, but the two celebrities are now “good buddies”. by ALLAN HALL – Tue 16 Aug 2005.

Richards, 61, who is to take the part of Sparrow’s father in a sequel to the film, said they had teamed up in pirate costumes to amuse his grandchildren.

But Richards appears to have enjoyed the joke and said Depp was now a firm friend. “Johnny is a good buddy,” he said.

“Recently, he visited me with a set of Disney pirate costumes and we disguised ourselves one afternoon and had a hell of a fun time. One of my grandkids thinks I am full-time pirate.”

Soursweet

Uncategorized by Martina

When it comes to confections, Tim Burton has confessed, his preference is dark, bitter chocolate. by Kenneth Turan. Weekend: August 13-14, 2005.

Our excerpt begins with Charlie and the other children at the factory with the legendary Willy Wonka.

Once these kids gather at the factory, Charlie perforce fades into the background and the film becomes the property of Depp’s Willy Wonka, a creature of hollow and unnatural glee who is odd even by the standards of previous Depp-Burton collaborations.

A fussy grotesque who makes Wilder’s eccentric candy maker look as cozy as Mister Rogers, Depp’s Willy gives off vibes as varied as Carol Channing and Michael Jackson. This former weird kid who grew up into a weird genius plays like Burton’s version of himself, someone so peculiar he exists outside the movie in his own particular corner of space and time.

Media interest in Hunter S. Thompson’s memorial service next weekend is coming from around the globe, but organizers are adamant that the invitation-only observance for the late Woody Creek journalist/author not turn into a media circus. By Janet Urquhart

Johnny Depp shines when he’s not playing a ‘real’ man

Projects by Martina

Sexual ambiguity has never looked so hip and appeared so harmless. By Felix Cheong, TODAY. 12 August 2005.

This is a man who has virtually carved a career out of depicting androgyny, hovering on the borderline between masculine and feminine, between oddball and deviant.

In Finding Neverland (2004), for instance, Depp plays author JM Barrie who is inspired to pen Peter Pan by his friendship with the children of Sylvia Llewellyn Davies.

But you’re never quite sure if it’s the sheer exuberance of their innocence that summons up the muse in him. Or perhaps something deeper and darker.

This sexual ambiguity surfaces in other Depp roles…
