  • This is disappointing but better off not premiering on December 21, 2012 as scheduled b/c of the Holiday season. In the U.S. the economy is really bad and people can’t afford the movies at that time. I would have made it a Christmas present to myself but most people are broke so close to Christmas and I don’t think it would have premiered with the box office results they were expecting. I think that is what happened here with The Tourist.

  • I sure hate that Disney had to stop production, but I agree with the others. The economy is very bad and I am pretty sure that Disney did not want to go into debt in trying to make a motion picture. I hope they will be able to start back up production. Good things come to those who wait!

  • I agree that, besides budgetary concerns, the premier date would most likely not help ticket sales. The economy is weak and people are down to their last dollar at that time of the year. My friend and I paid for ourselves to see the Tourist. If I’ had to pay for a family, we would have stayed home. Know matter how much I adore Johnny! I always thought that premiering the Tourist at Xmas hurt the film.

  • Honestly I’m not surprised. Westerns don’t work too well at the moment. Mostly they work – if they work – in America, but not in Europe. I just looked up box office results of some Westerns in the past. “3:10 to Yuma” barely broke even and bombed outside the US. Two Oscar nominations and Christian Bale and Russell Crowe didn’t help. At the moment “Cowboys & Aliens” also doesn’t do too well.

Johnnys latest movies made most of their money outside the US, but for example The Tourist was definitely an European movie and it worked fine over here and in Asia. But a western? That would mean that people only because of Johnny would have to buy the tickets – even if they would otherwise never watch a western. Johnny has a lot of fans, but I doubt that they could compensate for a genre that simply doesn’t work.

  • If you like werewolves….I don’t. It seems that after fish-people, mermaids and zombies we now get werewolves from Disney. Somehow I’m missing vampires and aliens.
Why is TLR so expensive? POTC4 had a budget of 250 million. And it was filmed on two continents with locations on remote islands and stuff like that. Even if I ignore the maybe true/maybe untrue informations about the TLR script I have only one idea where all the money was supposed to go: Special effects /CGI. Honestly I have enough of all that computer stuff. I prefer to look at something real. Why is it so hard to put people in a real enviroment and let them act without weird animated creatures?? When I want to watch a computer-animated movie I just do that. The same if I like to watch a Tarantino movie …..

  • Ya know, I’ve loved Disney since I was a kid. But I’m extremely ticked off that they cancelled the filming for Lone Ranger due to “production costs.” Given that Disney just made a BILLION DOLLARS for Stranger Tides, the fact that they’re crying poor about a film starring Johnny Depp is pathetic!! Especially since this film is about a very popular childhood hero for many of us. Maybe Disney should reconsider their worry about “production costs” and remember what made them all rich in the first place!!
