Sweeney Todd review

Movies by Martina

While we in Europe still have to wait, our staffer lizzy4depp had the chance to watch Sweeney Todd. Twice!

And the first thing she did at home was, writing this wonderful review for us all:

Short excerpt:

“…Whoever said that Johnny only sings in this movie obviously missed this piece, in which as his hands connect with the blades, turns into a poetic dance…”

It is wonderful to read, and you do not need to fear any spoilers. She did not tell anything about the story itself.

Movies by Martina

As the opening credits and music fill the screen, my mind is full of visions of the dark, violent bloody mess that may await me. Afraid to look at the screen but to enamored to look away, I hold my breath in anticipation of Johnny Depp’s entrance as this “demon barber.” I don’t have long to wait as the opening shot brings him right to the front of the screen as his newfound singing voice fills the air, something that is in no way a comparison to the listening of the soundtrack. The cinematography, a typical Tim Burton appearance, is familiar; yet beautiful in a strange compelling way. The biggest surprise is that the next hour and 55 minutes is not as much a scary horror-fest, as the press have painted it; but yet a scattering of giggles and laughter stemmed from the witty-sided humor that is peppered throughout the film. Helena is a shining star in this tale, standing out amongst the backdrop of the gloomy London streets.

The most fulfilling scene in this artist mural is the first song by Sweeny to his razors. Whoever said that Johnny only sings in this movie obviously missed this piece, in which as his hands connect with the blades, turns into a poetic dance. His beautiful fingers caressing and grasping the silver as he proceeds to sway his arms and gracefully move across the screen in something that resembles no less than a waltz, with the razors as his partner.

Orlando Still Blooming for ‘Pirates’

Zaptoit.com: Rumors of Will Turner’s death have been greatly exaggerated.

Fans afraid that Orlando Bloom won’t return to the “Pirates of the Caribbean” films can rest easy. Despite buzz that Bloom’s character would be sacrificed because of budget constraints, the rumors are “completely unfounded.”

Public Relations firm New Market Strategies informed journalists via email that Bloom will return to the swashbuckling franchise.

“As some of you may have seen,” begins the statement, “there have been some rumors going around online regarding potential absence of Orlando Bloom in the future ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ films. We are working closely with Disney and want you to know that while we cannot comment on specific plot points, such rumors are completely unfounded.”

The third installment, “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End,” is due in theaters May 2007.

‘Pirates’ Producers to Kill Off Bloom?

HOLLYWOOD – Orlando Bloom’s much-loved character in Pirates of the Caribbean will reportedly be killed off in the fourth installment of the Disney series — so says a Disney insider who spoke to the British paper Daily Star.

According to the source, the script for the fourth film is currently being written, and Disney bean counters are already examining ways to cut its massive costs.

According to British newspaper reports, Bloom’s character Will Turner is deemed “not necessary” to the sea-faring saga, although his cast mates Keira Knightley and Johnny Depp are unaffected by the cutbacks.

The report also states that the films’ minor characters, who were faithfully brought back for the first sequel, are also on the chopping block.
