Uncategorized by Martina

LOS ANGELES – Who exactly is Johnny Depp? Kids today know the actor for his colorful, Halloween-ready characters such as swaggering pirate Jack Sparrow, eccentric confectioner Willy Wonka and now as the gothic groom with cold feet named Victor – By Hanh Nguyen for the Star Online.

In his latest guise, Depp gives voice to the stop-motion animated puppet hero in Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride. While filming Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for Burton, Depp was called upon to create Victor on short notice. After shooting a scene earlier in the day as Wonka, the actor rushed over to the Corpse Bride recording studio where he cobbled together a persona based on a 15-minute grilling session with Burton.

“(Victor) was born in that little bit of time, and I didn’t hear him for the first time until … they were recording,” explains Depp. “So the preparation for this, I was remiss basically. I should be flogged.”

Interview: Johnny Depp Talking Burton’s Corpse Bride

Uncategorized by Martina

Just a few years ago, Tim Burton had to butt heads with studios to get them to agree to casting Johnny Depp as the lead. Everyone knew that Depp was a great actor. He had countless terrific performances to prove that, from Edward Scissorhands to What’s Eating Gilbert Grape to Donnie Brasco and Ed Wood. Box office draw was the title he had somehow avoided. All of that ended in the most unlikely circumstances, headlining a long-thought-dead genre, the pirate movie, and creating an endlessly entertaining character named Jack Sparrow – by Jeff Otto for IGN.

Burton’s “Corpse Bride” animates Venice film fest

Yahoo News – Mike Collett-White – VENICE (Reuters) – In Tim Burton’s ghoulish but hilarious animation movie “Corpse Bride,” the world of the dead is full of color, music and fun while the land of the living is black, white and oppressive.

For his latest film showcased at the Venice Film Festival on Wednesday, the director used painstaking “stop-motion” animation techniques with models, setting it apart from the more common computer generation used in hits like “Shrek” and “Toy Story.”

The film which took Burton 10 years to bring to the screen is not in competition for the Golden Lion this year, but the thunderous reception it received at a preview for the press and critics late on Tuesday suggested it may have been a contender.

Depp adds another quirky candy tycoon to his repertoire of oddball characters

Uncategorized by Martina

Japan Today – By Chris Betros – TOKYO – Johnny Depp has often been referred to as one of Hollywood’s chameleons, for his ability to play so many offbeat characters.

His latest effort, as eccentric chocolate tycoon Willy Wonka, in Tim Burton’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” is no exception. With his clip-on teeth and garish make-up, Wonka is another in the 42-year-old Depp’s long line of unique characters, among them Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Ichabod Crane, James Barrie and pirate Capt Jack Sparrow.

“Ever since I met Johnny for ‘Scissorhands,’ each time he has been more amazing,” said Burton, 47, during a visit to Japan this week with Depp. “He likes to act strangely and wear funny costumes. That’s the sort of person I like to work with.” For his part, Depp described Burton as someone he can have complete trust in.

Depp, who was last here in 1995 to promote “Dead Man,” received a rousing reception at Narita airport when he flew in by private jet. Nearly 2,000 fans were on hand to greet him, and at his news conference, a couple of hundred waited in vain outside the room. Depp seemed touched by the reception, although he doesn’t give much away.

He speaks slowly and softly, sometimes not sure what he is supposed to say. Dressed in jeans, brown jacket and with a flannel shirt tied around his waist, he looked quite cool with his grungy,
