Forgotten Classic of the Week – Ed Wood (1994)

Projects by Martina

Though Depp and Burton have made many good films together, none of them have been as good as the 1994 classic Ed Wood.

Depp stars as the title character Edward D. Wood, Jr. Ed Wood tells the story of this real life filmmaker and his quest for Hollywood glory. Ed Wood made classic ‘B’ movies such as Plan 9 From Outer Space and Bride of the Monster. The film Ed Wood shows Wood’s life through a sympathetic eye and shows a passionate filmmaker whose movies didn’t come out on screen the way he perceived them in his mind. The main plot of the film revolves around Ed’s friendship with horror movie legend Bela Lugosi. Lugosi and Wood worked together quite a few times during the end of Lugosi’s life.

Johnny Depp shines when he’s not playing a ‘real’ man

Projects by Martina

Sexual ambiguity has never looked so hip and appeared so harmless. By Felix Cheong, TODAY. 12 August 2005.

This is a man who has virtually carved a career out of depicting androgyny, hovering on the borderline between masculine and feminine, between oddball and deviant.

In Finding Neverland (2004), for instance, Depp plays author JM Barrie who is inspired to pen Peter Pan by his friendship with the children of Sylvia Llewellyn Davies.

But you’re never quite sure if it’s the sheer exuberance of their innocence that summons up the muse in him. Or perhaps something deeper and darker.

This sexual ambiguity surfaces in other Depp roles…
