Yesterday Johnny received the “Extraordinary Contribution to Film” – Award at theAustin Fim Festival. It was presented to him by Terry Rossio.

Johnny Depp at Austin Film Festival

The chance to see a major Hollywood player up close and personal brought hundreds to the Paramount Theater in downtown Austin Friday evening.
The actor causing the frenzy was Johnny Depp who arrived is in town this weekend for the Austin Film Festival.
Depp was there to debut his newest film “The Rum Diary”. It’s based on a Hunter S. Thompson novel telling the story of a journalist who moves to Puerto Rico and the ethical battles he has to fight there.
Depp is also receiving an award Saturday from the Austin Film Festival organizers called “Extraordinary Contribution to Film”.
No ABC affiliates were allowed to get an interview or video of Depp for the event because of a Disney contract revolving around his newest “Pirates of the Caribbean” film.

Here is a short The Rum Diary review by Lizzy who was able to see the movie at the LACMA premiere – she tried not to put any real spoilers.

There has been a long long wait for this film but it was well worth it. For those of you who have been saddened by the past few movie projects, this is the one we have been waiting for! The Rum Diary is johnny at his best, a mixture of his true rebel self and a piece of Hunter that he carries with him always, fills the screen larger than life!

In his upcoming film, The Rum Diary, Johnny Depp gives up Jack Sparrow’s mascara and natty dreads to play a hard-living American newspaperman down and out in 1950s Puerto Rico. Based on an early, semi-autobiographical novel by Hunter S. Thompson, the film was a long-in-the-works labor of love for Depp, who became real-life merry-prankster pals with the Gonzo author when he initially portrayed him in 1998′s whacked-out Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. This time out, Depp gets into all sorts of trouble on the tropical island, in no small part trying to impress the easy-on-the-eyes Amber Heard.
