This sincere and expressionistic portrait from one of contemporary culture’s most celebrated creative figures, Johnny Depp, hails from one of his most personal series titled ‘Everyman’. Here we see the artist portraying a recurring fictional figure, seemingly at once distant and recognisable, who symbolises a form or ideal common to all of humanity. In his attempt to connect to some commonality with the outside world, Depp highlights his own solitude necessitated by a life in the public eye, an irony whereby his ‘public persona’ is ostensibly owned by our culture at large. Here this ‘Everyman’ vibrates with anxious linear marks, fading or perhaps emerging through a turbulent confrontation between layers of creation and erasure. The energy of these gestures contrasts starkly with the stillness of the figure whose sorrowful eyes confront the viewer in an arresting gaze.
