Gore Verbinski’s speech:
“Thank you so much, this is crazy. Someone asked me if this film was for kids and, I don’t know, but it was certainly created by a bunch of grownups acting like children and we just had the best time. I want to thank the real-world chameleon, Mr. Johnny Depp, and the entire cast for coming out and playing. To the artists, “Crash” McCreery, Jim Byrkit, Hal Hickel, Tim Alexander, John Knoll, everybody at BlindWink and ILM who put so much passion into every frame, and to the early believers: John Logan, Graham King, Brad Grey, and everyone at Paramount who really let us try something different. And to my beautiful wife and my family who inspire me every day with their smiles and laughter. It doesn’t get any better than this, thank you.”

Gore Verbinski backstage:

“Oscar-winning animated feature Rango was made outside the studio system, and the key to getting it made was simply “Johnny Depp,” director/producer Gore Verbinski said of his animated debut. “Once he was in, things started to happen. We went to (producer) Graham King and for the first 18 months, (writer) John Logan and I just worked out of our houses.” Directing live-action and animated films are “two different hats,” Verbinski said. “Sure, underneath there’s a story you want to tell, but there are no gifts in animation. You have to fabricate everything, even the anomalies.” One of the methods Verbinski employed in directing Rango was taking his voiceover actors outside the sound booth and having them actually act out their parts in a studio. “I don’t know any other way of directing actors,” said the director, “By doing it this way, it felt like the action was occurring.  We could encourage line overlaps and the actors were out of breath.  We didn’t want the computer (animation) to make this clinical. Johnny was always about finding something which was unrehearsed.”
