Maïwenn wrote, directed, and produced the 2023 historical drama film Jeanne du Barry, which stars her and Johnny Depp in lead roles. The film also features Pierre Richard, Benjamin Lavernhe, Noémie Lvovsky, Pascal Greggory, Melvil Poupaud, and India Hair. The plot revolves around Madame du Barry, who exploits her knowledge and attractiveness to advance through society. She becomes King Louis XV’s favourite, they fall in love, and du Barry moves to Versailles, scandalizing the court.
Jeanne du Barry is a joint production between France, Belgium, and the United Kingdom. It was produced by Why Not Productions and Depp’s IN.2 Film, a European sister business to his Los Angeles-based Infinitum Nihil, and released by Le Pacte. Jeanne du Barry had a budget of $22.4 million, making it one of the most expensive French films of 2023, and one of just three with a budget of more than ten million euros. The film made its global premiere as the opening film at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival on May 16, 2023, and was released theatrically in France on the same day by Le Pacte, 15 months before its scheduled streaming release on Netflix in France.
