Moonlighting Rocker Johnny Depp: A Guitar-Playing Pirate Looks at 50

General News by Andrea

Johnny Depp turns 50 on June 9, and in many ways, the Lone Ranger star is typical for his age: He had a youthful dream of being a rock star that was thwarted as he had to settle for the mundane, day-to-day drudgery of being one of the world’s most acclaimed and accomplished actors. What middle-ager stuck in a fallback career can’t relate?

Johnny, the fossil.

General by Martina
see the similarity?
see the similarity?

Only a few weeks before Johnny’s 50th birthday, a 505 million-year-old fossil with “scissor hand-like” claws has been named after the  Johnny Depp.

Kooteninchela deppi (pronounced Koo-ten-ee-che-la depp-eye) was named by the researcher David Legg after Johnny because of his starring role as Edward Scissorhands.

Mr. Legg can be forgiven – who can evade Johnny’s impact?

“In truth, I am also a bit of a Depp fan and so what better way to honour the man than to immortalise him as an ancient creature that once roamed the sea?”

(wasn’t that Captain Jack Sparrow already?)

First Listen: ‘Son Of Rogues Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs & Chanteys’

General News Projects by Andrea

As its title suggests, Son of Rogues Gallery isn’t the first overstuffed collection of what it dubs “Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs & Chanteys.” The first Rogues Gallery compilation, dreamt up by the Pirates of the Caribbean team of Johnny Depp and director Gore Verbinski, came out in 2006 with the help of an all-star cast; Nick Cave, Sting, Richard Thompson, Bryan Ferry, the actor John C. Reilly, Bono and countless others contributed to a dark, strange, profane and occasionally impenetrable glut of music.

The Album will be available February 19, 2013.
