Day Drinker filming starting very soon
Filming for Marc Webb’s upcoming movie, ‘Day Drinker,’ is set to kick off in Madrid, Spain, in the first quarter of 2025. Johnny is leading the cast, alongside PenĂ©lope Cruz and Madelyn Cline, with Zach Dean writing the script. Lionsgate is backing the project, which marks a big return for Johnny to major studio films after the whirlwind of the past few years.
The story follows a bartender on a cruise ship who meets a mysterious day drinker. Their encounter drags them into the dangerous depths of the criminal underworld, uncovering some wild, unexpected connections along the way.
Adam Fogelson, the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair, is genuinely excited about this one. He’s confident that the combo of Marc Webb’s vision, Johnny’s talent, and Penélope’s energy will result in something truly special.
This project also brings Johnny and PenĂ©lope back together for their fourth collaboration—they’ve built quite the bond over the years, from ‘Blow’ to ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’, and ‘Murder on the Orient Express’.

Madelyn Cline Joins Johnny Depp in Lionsgate’s ‘Day Drinker’
Deadline confirmed today that Outer Banks actress Madelyn Cline is the latest star to join Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz in Lionsgate’s Day Drinker pic. Marc Webb is directing.
The film is produced by Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, who produce the John Wick franchise for Lionsgate, and Adam Kolbrenner, producer of The Tomorrow War, Free Guy and Prisoners, and Zach Dean, who also wrote the original screenplay. (Kolbrenner and Dean’s film The Gorge, which they produced for Apple TV+/Skydance, is set for release next week.)
The film is executive produced by 30WEST. Lionsgate will present Day Drinker in association with 30WEST. The film is a Thunder Road/IN.2 production.
In Day Drinker, a cruise ship bartender meets a mysterious day drinker—only for both to find themselves entangled in a criminal underbelly and connected in unexpected ways.
