STARmeter Top 25 for 2005

General by Martina

IMDB.com – The Movie database IMDb.com has just released their top 25 mega-stars for the year 2005. The STARmeter rankings are based on the actual search behavior of over 30 million users of the database.

Johnny is at the top of the list…

1. Johnny Depp (Last year 2004: #1)
The hits keep on coming for Mr. Depp, the IMDb’s favorite for the second year in a row. Starting out the year with an Oscar nomination for Finding Neverland, Depp wowed everyone with his, um, idiosyncratic interpretation of Willy Wonka in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, lent his voice to another Tim Burton flick, Corpse Bride, and started filming on back-to-back sequels for Pirates of the Caribbean.

Shane MacGowan on Depp

General by Martina

Sunday December 18, 2005 – Recently Katie Melua dished with Pogues singer Shane MacGowan on Johnny Depp, for The Observer

KM: Johnny Depp recently said you’ve produced ‘beautiful lyrics that are a great gift to the world.’ What do you make of that? A fair summary?

SM: Ha! He is a great actor and a great guitar player too. We played together. He really heavied it up. His guitar playing releases all of his rage and frustration. We did one song together, but forgot to record it. But it sounded like an atom bomb going off!

KM: You took a small part in his recent film The Libertine, didn’t you?

SM: Yeah, I enjoyed working with him, but they dumped the bit I was in. I was supposed to be a drunken minstrel so I put together a really offensive anti-Catholic, anti-Monarchist, anti-English song that would offend everyone in the crowd. They hadn’t told the crowd of extras that they weren’t meant to clap politely. But Johnny and I might work together again, on the story of Brendan Behan, who at the height of his fame managed to drink himself to death.

Johnny – Entertainer of the Year Honors

Uncategorized by Martina

Canada’s Inside Entertainment magazine has named Johnny as one of its Entertainers of the year for 2005. The Entertainer of the Year honors for the best of the very best included more than 200 nominees, covering every aspect of the arts, from film and television to stage and page. Fifteen finalists were bestowed the dynamic title including Jason Lee, (40 Year-Old Virgin), Steve Carell (The Office), mega-star Johnny Depp (the first repeat visitor to the magazine’s end-of-year tally) and the British supergroup Coldplay.

Inside Entertainment had this to say about Johnny:

As late as three years ago, Johnny Depp seemed, though hugely respected by peers and critics, rather a fringe player in comparison to Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. Then ghostbusting pirate Jack Sparrow swaggered his way to nearly $700m in global receipts, earning Depp a surprise, if long overdue, Oscar nod. Suddenly, his delightfully offbeat characters were earning not just hurrahs, but also huge amounts of cash. This past year, Depp remained steadfastly true to his uncompromisingly quirky standards, continuing merrily along his colourful path (and defying the year’s sharp downward turn in ticket sales) with first his vibrantly sinister re-imagining of Willie Wonka in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, then, proving he could be equally magical using only his voice as bedeviled groom Victor in Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride.
