Dick Cook abruptly leaves Walt Disney Studios

Dick Cook, the longtime head of Walt Disney Studios, abruptly left the company Friday afternoon after 38 years. The studio has had an uneven box-office performance and has been struggling creatively. It lost money in its most recent financial quarter.
Cook was summoned into a meeting and was told the studio “wanted to go in a different direction,” said the person. A Disney spokesperson denied the report.

Concerning Pirates of the Caribbean 4 that development could mean nothing or everything.
Johnny Depp said while he has a potential deal in place that will depend on how good the script is, his passion for the project at the moment has been severely dampened by the news that Cook will no longer be around. Cook had called him in person to break the news.
The LA Times quotes Johnny: “There’s a fissure, a crack in my enthusiasm at the moment. It was all born in that office.”

Verbinski turns PotC4 down.

Gore Verbinski turned down and changed his mind on directing PotC4. About that he informed Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer.

“I had a fantastic time bringing ‘Pirates’ to life, and I am eternally grateful to Jerry, Johnny and the rest of the creative and production team,” he said. “I’m looking forward to all of us crossing paths again in the future.”

He will still work together with Johnny on the movie Rango, with Johnny giving voice for the CG-character.

We don’t know yet who will direct PotC4, but we’ll post as soon as we know 🙂

PotC4 is at insiders rumoured to be filmed in Australia and New Zealand

Johnny is Tonto, Mad Hatter, and a small confirmation of PotC4!

They pulled out all the stops at the Walt Disney Studios Showcase today with everything but a marching band! That is until the USC marching band showed up playing THE LONE RANGER theme!

This is where it gets interesting, in the background the Lone Ranger logo appeared on the screen, but that’s not all, the screen pulled up to reveal someone dressed in The Lone Ranger costume on a white horse and everything.

After the Lone Ranger left the stage, Dick Cook said Disney did not know just yet who would be playing the Lone Ranger, but he says they have had several candidates.

Just then, from behind, someone in full Jack Sparrow regalia came out onto the stage holding a nickel plated revolver and wearing the Lone Ranger black mask.

He removes the mask to reveal his true identity JOHNNY DEPP!!

The audience yet wild to say the least!

Cook says it would be a perfect Trifecta, Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland and now as The Lone Ranger and he promised Disney would throw in another Pirates movie for good measure.

UPDATE: Disney has just confirmed to IESB that Depp in fact is officially signed on to play TONTO in the Lone Ranger film and not the Lone Ranger himself.

It looks like Disney and Depp certainly have a long relationship ahead!

It was an amazing day at the Disney preview and Depp was certainly the icing on the cake!

This goes along with something we reported some time ago that Pirates helmer Gore Verbinski and crew including writers Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio would be behind the Lone Ranger film, Depp likes to work with those he knows…

Orlando Still Blooming for ‘Pirates’

Zaptoit.com: Rumors of Will Turner’s death have been greatly exaggerated.

Fans afraid that Orlando Bloom won’t return to the “Pirates of the Caribbean” films can rest easy. Despite buzz that Bloom’s character would be sacrificed because of budget constraints, the rumors are “completely unfounded.”

Public Relations firm New Market Strategies informed journalists via email that Bloom will return to the swashbuckling franchise.

“As some of you may have seen,” begins the statement, “there have been some rumors going around online regarding potential absence of Orlando Bloom in the future ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ films. We are working closely with Disney and want you to know that while we cannot comment on specific plot points, such rumors are completely unfounded.”

The third installment, “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End,” is due in theaters May 2007.

‘Pirates’ Producers to Kill Off Bloom?

HOLLYWOOD – Orlando Bloom’s much-loved character in Pirates of the Caribbean will reportedly be killed off in the fourth installment of the Disney series — so says a Disney insider who spoke to the British paper Daily Star.

According to the source, the script for the fourth film is currently being written, and Disney bean counters are already examining ways to cut its massive costs.

According to British newspaper reports, Bloom’s character Will Turner is deemed “not necessary” to the sea-faring saga, although his cast mates Keira Knightley and Johnny Depp are unaffected by the cutbacks.

The report also states that the films’ minor characters, who were faithfully brought back for the first sequel, are also on the chopping block.
