A group of A-list talent came together in November to help 16-year old cancer patient Anthony Jonathan Conti fulfill his dream of writing and starring in his own film. Johnny Depp, J.K. Simmons, Laura Dern, Penelope Ann Miller, Chad Coleman, and Richard Chamberlain were joined by David Lynch, Catherine Hardwicke, Theodore Melfi, Sam Raimi, Peter Farrelly, and Sean Furst for The Black Ghiandola, a post-apocalyptic zombie story about a young man whose family has been killed and who risks his life to save a young girl he has grown to love. Filming took place November 18-20.

Anthony, diagnosed this summer with stage 4 Adrenal Cortical Cancer, stars in and co-wrote the film with Scott Kosar (Texas Chainsaw Massacre), with additional writing by Wash Westmoreland (Still Alice). The production was made possible by the Make A Film Foundation, a nonprofit established in 2007 that helps children enduring serious or life-threatening medical conditions to create short film legacies by teaming them with industry professionals who volunteer their time.

When news broke that Johnny was set to “co-star” in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2, the sequel to this mont’s wizarding world expansion Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, speculation immediately zeroed in on who Johnny might play. Given that Gellert Grindelwald, former friend of Albus Dumbledore, supposedly has a major role to play in this new Fantastic Beasts franchise, folks began wondering if Depp might be bringing the dark wizard to life. Well, yes, it’s true: Johnny Depp is playing Gellert Grindelwald.

The news was confirmed by director David Yates himself, who directed the final four Harry Potter films as well as Fantastic Beasts and is returning for the sequel. In speaking with The Leaky Cauldron, he revealed why they chose Johnny to fill such a pivotal role:

“The whole principal of casting the movie was go with the best actor. Go for the most inspired, interesting, right fit for that character. And as we approached Grindelwald we thought, ‘Who’s going to take this in an interesting direction?’ In this business, it’s a weird old business. You’re brilliant one week, people are saying odd things the next, you go up and down. But no one takes away your pure talent. Johnny Depp is a real artist. He’s created several characters who have really resonated in our popular culture. He’s a really brilliant, brilliant actor. We were excited about seeing what he would do with this guy, the character. He’s fearless; he’s imaginative; he’s ambitious. We thought he would do something fun and special. So we went for him, purely on that selfish basis. We don’t care if he’s famous or not famous. We just know he’s interesting.”

Spoiler alert

Bit by bit, little hints and rumors are revealed regarding Johnny’s upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales movie, which will be released in 2017. Since he’s been missing in the first teaser trailer, fans are being concerned that he might not play a huge role in the movie at all. However, it appears that the producers intentionally took Capt. Jack Sparrow out of the trailer to catch the attention of the viewers.

The fans of Johnny Depp also known as Jack Sparrow can stop holding their breath as reports say that the endearingly naughty pirate will be present in Pirates Of The Caribbean 5. In fact, Capt. Jack Sparrow will reportedly have a new apple to his eye – his weakness, a woman.

Not much has been revealed about that though. Only rumors and hints have been published! Stay tuned for more. But more is certain about the aspect of love in the upcoming fifth Pirates movie.

Orlando Bloom’s character, Will Turner, will not be seen with the love of his life in the film. Elizabeth Swann, played by Keira Knightley, will not be returning in Pirates Of The Caribbean 5, which sparked speculations that Will Turner will have a new lady love.

The exit of Elizabeth Swann will be compensated by a new character, Carina Smyth. Kaya Scodelario will bring Carina Smyth to life, who is said to be Capt. Jack Sparrow’s lady love. However, Carina Smyth is – ironically – the daughter of Capt. Barbossa. Chaos ensues as Capt. Barbossa learns that his enemy is in love with his daughter.

Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales will set sail on May 26, 2017 (US).

Finally, the first teaser trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell no Tales has been released. Unfortunately, the trailer comes without johnny in it.

The most interesting thing about this trailer is that A) it offers a grim, dark, and moody look as opposed to a more buoyant and comic sell and B) it features no Jack Sparrow whatsoever. Instead, it is a grim, violent tease which climaxes with the reveal of our major villain, played by Javier Bardem, who is hunting Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow for reasons not yet revealed. Whether or not his absence is related to the much-discussed domestic abuse allegations, it is a buzzy way to reintroduce a franchise that hasn’t been on the pop culture radar for awhile.

It’s obviously an announcement teaser, but it is rooted in the notion that merely the idea of Jack Sparrow showing up eventually is enough to get audiences interested. Moreover, it offers a proceeding 75 seconds or so that are intriguing and engaging enough to audiences sans knowledge of what movie is being sold.
