Producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently took to his blog to update the fans on how things are shaping up, as well as sharing some new on-set images that give an impression of the scale and majesty we can expect from the cinematography.

“Almost done with filming of The Lone Ranger,” begins Bruckheimer. “125 days of shooting seemed to fly by. We dealt with winds up to 70 mph, rain, snow, and even wildfires but nothing has stopped us from filming this incredible movie.”

In the past year, Disney’s production of The Lone Ranger has had it’s share of ‘bad.’ Bad press, bad luck, bad omens…bad everything. Heck, last week the production got in to a little bit of trouble with the U.S. Bureau Of Land Management in Moab, Utah. It turns out an over enthusiastic member of BLM had sought to deny the film the chance to alter their permit due to the danger the change would cause to a fragile desert ecosystem, that isn’t even technically endangered or in harms way. Fortunately that situation was resolved and production moved on.

(Katherine Vandrilla was required to keep this story under wraps for the past year, due to certain confidential aspects of the Johnny Depp project. A Berlin High School graduate and contributor to The Berlin Citizen, she now reveals her involvement in the Make-A-Wish program – which led to an encounter with Depp – in this exclusive story.)

My friend Randy e-mailed a photo to me Friday morning of an old Western-style train car. He told me the new Disney movie version of “The Lone Ranger” starring Johnny Depp as Tonto is shooting right next door to his office in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and the train car was plainly visible.

I said, what a coincidence because “The Lone Ranger” is shooting right across the street from my office here in Arcadia too — at least they are setting up a giant green screen (it’s actually blue) for a second unit to film some visual effects shots for the movie for a few days once they get finished with the structure. Most of the principal photography for the movie scheduled to open on July 3, 2013, has been in New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona and Utah all year. (Armie Hammer has the title Kimosabe role.)

The Moab to Monument Valley Film Commission has repeatedly expressed concern regarding an incident between a Bureau of Land Management employee and the creative team from the Lone Ranger at a filming site on July 6.

The conflict occurred when last minute changes were made regarding a film permit on BLM land in the Professor Valley area. The director wanted to move a set and have horsemen ride 50-abreast, rather than 50 horsemen riding two abreast. The BLM employee on site was concerned about how the changes would affect the cryptobiotic soil and vegetation. While the film crew was able to have all the changes they requested, they expressed frustration at how the issue was handled by the BLM employee.

The Lone Ranger’s struggles have been well documented: after shuffling from studio to studio through an extended development period, it was taken on by Disney at a reported $250 million budget.

But after the disappointing results for another action-western, Cowboys and Aliens, production was halted so the budget could be scaled back.

After a period of considerable uncertainty, when it seemed that the entire project could collapse, agreement was reached and filming began. The release date is set for early summer 2013.
