Exclusive Cannes First Look of Johnny as war photographer W. Eugene Smith in “Minatama”

Johnny Depp is joined by Japanese actress Minami (Battle Royale) in this exclusive still from Minamata, which was revealed exclusively in Cannes.

For those who don’t know yet, the drama – being directed by Andrew Levitas – sees Johnny as acclaimed war photographer W. Eugene Smith. Levitas directs from a screenplay by David K. Kessler, who adapted the book by Smith and his wife, Aileen Mioko Smith. Bill Nighy, Hiroyuki Sanada, Tadanobu Asano, Ryo Kase and Jun Kunimura also star.

The redemptive thriller sees Smith (played by Johnny) take on a powerful corporation responsible for poisoning the people of Minamata, Japan, in 1971. With the glory days of World War II far behind him, Smith has become a recluse, disconnected from society and his career. But an old friend and a commission from a Life magazine editor (Bill Nighy) convince him to journey back to Japan to expose a big story: the devastating annihilation of a coastal community.

Johnny is producing via his Infinitum Nihil banner, along with Sam Sarkar and Levitas under his Metalwork Pictures banner, and Gabrielle Tana. Jason Forman, Stephen Deuters, Peter Watson, Phil Hunt, Compton Ross, Gabrielle Stewart, Stephen Spence, Peter Touche, Norman Merry, Kevan Van Thompson and Peter Hampden are executive producing.

HanWay Films is handling international sales and distribution on Minamata, which will continue in Cannes. CAA Media Finance will handle U.S. rights.

As the title says, a new image of Johnny as W. Eugene Smith behind the scenes of Minamata has been posted by photographer Greg Williams on his official Instagram account. The caption of the photo said:

#johnnydepp having wrapped for the day on the film #minamata in #montenegro where he plays the greatest photo essayist of all time (in my humble opinion) #WEugeneSmith while documenting the mercury poisoning of the Japanese city in the 70s
Wonderful Eugene Smith
Having finished the day shooting a scene in an outdoor bath he was driven home in a dressing gown to keep him dry and warm, see the water drops still in his face
Shot in the back of a car and lit with the shitty L.E.D. light you get above a car door, impossibly slow shutter speed, his prosthetic beard still on

Especially, the unique video of Johnny Depp’s talking to the baby, kidding, a little and cursing in Serbian, and she’s like chill 😁 because the baby is one of the rare that ” caught the sparrow”
